The edges on patio cushions can come in different shapes to fit the furniture correctly. Each shape is made in many different ways.
A square edge, or box edge, cushion is usually made with three pieces of fabric. They can have piping or cording work around the top edges as well as bottom edges of the cushion. The material will have a zipper sewn on the back side of it. This allows the cover to be removed for easy cleaning, repairing or replacing.
Some cushions have what is referred to as a knife edge. This cushion tends to look like a pillow when in full form. The material is brought together in one edge that surrounds the cushion. Cushion fillings are made with different materials and is dependent upon the manufacturer. Fiber is a better choice of material for making outdoor cushions. The fiber dries faster than foam does and this can add to the life expectancy of the cushion.
Many manufacturers tend to use fiber filling for the cushions that resemble pillows. This kind of fiber fill will give the cushion a much lighter feel to it.
Square, thicker cushions, usually have a type of poly fiber fill for their insert. The manufacturers can make these cushions in different widths and heights with use of layers. These cushions are generally firmer than the ones filled with fiber filling.
